Local climate and health resilience case studies

Tuesday, November 5, 2013: 10:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
Oral
In 2011, APHA released the practical guidebook "Climate Change: Mastering the Public Health Role" which highlighted the role of the public health community in climate change activities. The guidebook encouraged state and local health to be part of the planning around climate change action plans. CDC and national nonprofit partners, including the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO) and the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO), have been working with health departments on key priorities to address the health consequences of climate change. Included in those efforts is work to develop and deploy systems and tools needed to conduct climate change needs assessments that account for local health vulnerabilities. CDC’s BRACE framework provides guidance to states and cities to develop strategies and programs to confront the health implications of climate change. How have these projects been incorporating complex atmospheric data and both short and long range climate projections into public health planning and response activities? In this session, three of CDC's Climate-Ready States and Cities grantees discuss the new capacity that their health departments were able to develop by having CDC grants, and how they have already been able to use this new capacity or how this new capacity is on standby in the event of an emergency etc.
