APHA President-Elect Session: Best Practices in Public Health Leadership Development Around the World

Monday, November 4, 2013: 4:30 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.
Oral
The 1988 Institute of Medicine (IOM) Report on The Future of Public Health states, “The need for leadership development is too great to leave its emergence to chance”. The World Health Organization (WHO) and other international groups have described the importance of rethinking current practices in leadership development to focus on outcomes, transitioning leadership to a new generation, and ensuring that leadership development is more than personal development. Both emerging and senior leaders benefit from programs that provide life-long learning, also described as an ecological model for leadership development (Rowitz). This panel session will feature five presenters with abundant experience in developing leaders for the public’s health in regional, national, and international programs. Following a brief presentations, the moderator will engage the panel in a discussion about issues to help move leadership development into the future, including sharing of best practices from around the globe, and the need for effective program evaluation. There will be ample time for questions and comments from the audience.
Session Objectives: Discuss a variety of leadership development program models from around the globe. Explain the value of providing culturally appropriate leadership development training.
