Think Global, Act Local: Community-Based Public Health Around the World

This session focuses on community-based research and public health efforts taking place in the United States and abroad, and the lessons that can be learned from understanding the challenges and benefits of community-based efforts in different international contexts. This diverse set of presentations will discuss a collaborative effort to construct a water distribution system in Cameroon, the implementation of research studies in the US and South Africa, an exploration of interorganizational partnerships in Nairobi, the application of community-engaged research principles in low resource countries, and perspectives on emergency response in rural settings.
Session Objectives: Explain the importance of collaborative community-academic partnerships to public health research and practice in international settings. Discuss similarities and differences of community-based public health conducted in the United States and in other, largely low resource, countries. Describe challenges associated with conducting community-engaged research in low resource countries and how they may be addressed.
