Community factors and place-based innovations to promote health

A significant body of evidence has documented the powerful role of “place” in shaping health inequities. Reducing health inequities among Latinos requires approaches that address upstream factors that jeopardize health as well as those that strengthen community assets that contribute to opportunity and health. Panelists will present innovative place-based strategies for improving health in Latino communities and discuss findings and factors that enhance positive social ties and community engagement in Latino communities. The goal of this session is to share information that advances the knowledge base and enriches the discussion on community engaged strategies for addressing public health issues in Latino communities.
Session Objectives: By the end of this panel, the participants will be able to: 1) Identify elements of place-based strategies for increasing physical activity among Latino youth, 2) Discuss the role of Latino/immigrant community composition on social ties among Latino immigrants and their US born counterparts, and 3) Understand strategies for successful community-engaged interventions to address heart health.
