Immigrant and Minority Health and Aging

The diverse experiences of immigrants and minorities in the United States are important issues. This session covers the following topics: racial/ethnic variations in sexual behaviors, healthcare interaction characteristics, and HIV-related perceptions among adults age 60 years and older; substance use among mid life and older African americans; racial/ethnic disparities in quality and patient experience within Medicare plans generalize across measures and racial/ethnic groups; an examination of gardening by race/ethnicity among older adults, and potential health implications of racial and ethnic disparities in meeting MTM eligibility criteria.
Session Objectives: 1. To compare sexual behaviors, health-related indicators, interactions with healthcare professionals, and HIV-related perceptions across participants' race/ethnicity. 2.To examine differences in recent drug use patterns including (1) drugs of choice and (2) frequency of use for 21 different substances by various routes of transmission between younger and older cohorts of AA's. 3.To assess the extent to which racial/ethnic disparities in clinical performance and patient experience within Medicare Advantage (MA) plans are similar for different measures and different racial/ethnic groups. 4. To examine whether racial and ethnic disparities in health status, health services utilization/costs, and medication utilization patterns among MTM-ineligible individuals differed from MTM-eligible individuals.
