Healthcare Utilization and Costs
Monday, November 4, 2013: 10:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
Oral
This session addresses various aspects of the issues related to health outcomes and health care utilization among the elderly population, including hospitalizations for severe sepsis among Medicare beneficiaries; short-stay admissions via emergency departments; home health agencies' costs in the PPS era; age-focused evaluation of prevalence, healthcare costs, and utilization, by CCS condition, in the military health system; and predictors of care transitions among dual-eligible residential care facility residents.
Session Objectives: 1. To examine how hospitalizations for this complicated form of sepsis differs from hospitalizations for non-complicated sepsis in elderly Medicare patients. 2. To assess the association of payment source and hospital ownership with the percentage of short-stay admissions (2 days or less) via emergency departments. 3. To understand the cost structure of home health agencies (HHA) following the implementation of PPS. 4. To examine the prevalence, healthcare use and costs associated with increasing age among Military Health System (MHS) beneficiaries. 5. To examine care transition patterns among residential care facility (RCF) residents in Florida and to identify predictors of burdensome transitions.
