Global solutions to Asian and/or Pacific Islander public health challenges

The Asian and Pacific Islander (API) population is a global community. The diversity of API populations – in terms of origin and destination of migration, ethnicity, culture and languages spoken – presents a unique opportunity for sharing lessons learned in public health research and practice. This session will present local and creative approaches to addressing public health challenges in API populations around the world, including substance use and chronic disease prevention and how to effectively disseminate evidence-based practices in settings characterized by fragmented health systems.
Session Objectives: Define and introduce an evidence-based public health (EBPH) framework. Evaluate the effectiveness of systematic 4-year diabetes Educator Training Courses in Solomon Islands. Identify methods to build local data capacity to support substance abuse prevention efforts conducted by coalitions in the Philippines. Describe the process of working with a faith-based organization to gather community- identified issues in Northern Laos.
