Using Health Impact Assessments to Enhance Transportation Policy: Grounding McGrath

In response to the Massachusetts groundbreaking transportation reform law requiring the use of Health Impact Assessments (HIAs) in transportation planning, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health completed the first officially mandated HIA. This HIA focused on de-elevation of the McGrath Highway in Somerville, Massachusetts and included assessments of air quality, noise, mobility/connectivity, public safety and land use. The HIA served as a unique complement to the transportation planning project and serves as a model for cross-sector collaboration.
