Panel II: Taking the lead, being a leader: A case study of working with APHA for public health advocacy on food systems

APHA has adopted hundreds of policy statements over the years addressing scores of public health problems and solutions. Public health leaders have a role in developing, promoting and using APHA policy statements to advance research initiatives, improve laws and regulations, establish interventions, and evaluate the effectiveness of them all. This presentation will provide examples of how some public health leaders have worked with APHA policy staff and other APHA members on policy to support a healthier, more sustainable food system. Through this example, participants will understand how to use APHA policy statements as integral tools in the fight for health and justice, learn about working across APHA sections, and get some nitty-gritty details on what it takes to move from a policy statement on the books to policy action by APHA as an association.

Learning Objectives:
Identify the steps that need to be followed for APHA to take action on a policy issue. Describe at least two ways to work across APHA sections for policy action. Describe how to find and use APHA policy statements that may support their public health advocacy priorities.
