Defining PH essential functions and competencies

The PH essential functions concept has been widely adopted. However different models for the same conceptual framework abound, leading to fractionalization and insular activities on the basis of the different models. As part of the process of achieving a globally accepted framework of essential public health functions the WFPHA has promoted the establishment of a taskforce representing major national, regional and international organizations in public health. The essential functions work is part of a larger effort to achieve harmonization in what we expect of public health professionals to be able to do - their competencies. The proposed model for aligning training and education of public health professionals with public health system performance and measurements at system level and individual level is a starting point towards increasing professionalization in public health and achieving much needed standardization and a common vocabulary for public health professionals.
