Food insecurity globally is at an all-time high and has been rising since 2006. This trend is mirrored in the United States. Throughout 2010, three million New York City residents experienced food insecurity. There is very little evidence-based research to guide public, long term care policy for food insecure, homebound seniors. As a result, Goddard Riverside Community Center and the Center for Long Term Care Research & Policy at New York Medical College created a partnership to document the needs of New York City's at-risk homebound elderly. The partnership was named Nourish FIRST (Food Initiative Resource Study of Older Adults in New York City). The partners developed a two-year plan for assessing the level of food security as well as the health, functional/independent living status, and social service needs of 500 frail elderly homebound individuals in New York City. This presentation includes an overview of key findings and their impact on national and international long term care policy development for aging, food insecure elderly within our communities
