Multi-faceted approaches that include simultaneous educational interventions for the public and providers can play an important role in reducing unwarranted prescriptions for antibiotics. We will review activities implemented in multiple jurisdictions as part of collaborative efforts supported by the CDC Get Smart Program and local partners. Factors that contributed to successful implementation (such as identification of enabling environment, program ownership and commitment by local teams and integration into routine systems), will be highlighted. Solutions to obstacles encountered will also be discussed. The session will include demonstration of Web-based resources, vignettes from use of social media during the 2012 Get Smart About Antibiotics Week (November 12-18) and a preview of 2013 activities.

Learning Objectives • Be able to identify an intervention and a lesson learned in a state activity addressing appropriate use of antibiotics. • Describe three features of a website that can be used to promote appropriate use of antibiotics among patients and providers. • Provide three examples how you can make use of social media and local resources to promote Get Smart About Antibiotics Week 2013.
