Essential ties between public health, the environment and our federal food and farm policy

The presentation will begin with an overview of federal food and farm policies that impact public health and the environment, most notably the Farm Bill and the Child Nutrition Act. Within these two pieces of legislation, there are various nutrition, research, horticulture, conservation, and other policies and programs that impact some aspect of the food system from producer to consumer and that have far-reaching effects on public health, all of which will be discussed.

Then, the presentation will explain the intersection between federal policy and individuals and organizations at the local and State levels. Not only can local and State players influence federal policy, but when federal policy is stalled, action can be taken at the local and State levels to move food and farm needs forward.
