More than 3.4 million Americans aged 40 years and older are either blind or have uncorrected vision loss. The number of people with vision loss is expected to double over the next three decades. National studies indicate the association of vision loss with higher prevalence of chronic health conditions, falls, depression, and premature death. The annual direct and indirect cost of vision problems reached 139 billion. However, More than 50% of vision loss could be prevented or remediated;

Public health research is an essential element in the quest to 1) reduce the burden of vision loss, eye diseases, and eye injury; 2) reduce vision health disparity; 3) improve access to eye care and rehabilitation services; 4) expand and improve the knowledge base through research, surveillance, and knowledge translation; 5) develop programs that can be scaled up, sustained, and expanded nationwide.

Qualified on the content I am responsible for because: I have been the scientific collaborator on a multi-center project to assess and evaluate system and individual factors impacting access to, and the quality of eye care. In particular, a network study to examine the feasibility and efficacy of Diabetic retinopathy screening using non-invasive, non-mydriatic fundus imaging in community-based settings, specifically primary care health clinics and pharmacies.
