Security threats of climate change

Monday, November 4, 2013 : 1:42 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.

Catherine Thomasson, MD, Physicians for Social Responsibility, WA DC, DC
Water rights, loss of grazing land, reduced food production, high food prices, and extreme weather events are already causing conflict due to climate change. Several examples will be presented that outline factors more likely to increase conflict, including regions with marginalized populations, minimal infrastructure, and scarcity of natural resources. New studies reviewing predictions for potential conflict will be presented. Climate-induced migration will also strain many countries and lead to heightened concerns about economics and job security.
