Let's move! for Pacific Islander communities: An evidence-based 10 minute exercise break
Monday, November 4, 2013
: 10:30 a.m. - 10:50 a.m.
Research tested intervention programs are designed to improve the health of communities, yet many are not tailored nor utilized by communities that bear a higher burden of cancer, such as Pacific Islanders. As a way to disseminate an existing proven physical activity intervention into practice among Pacific Islanders (PIs) in Southern California, Weaving an Islander Network for Awareness, Research and Training (WINCART) adapted an evidence-based 10-minute exercise video to help PIs build physical activity into their day. Instant Recess, proven to be effective in the workplace, was adapted into Let's Move, for use in PI community settings reaching Samoans, Tongans, Chamorros, Marshallese and Native Hawaiians. Using tools and resources from NCI's National Outreach Network, WINCART adapted the Let's Move, 10 minute exercise break to include movements, music, and people to represent the cultures of the Pacific Islands without compromising fidelity to the original intervention. Let's Move is currently being implemented through PI community organizations like church groups and social clubs in three Southern California counties. Process and outcome evaluations have been designed to determine, dissemination capability to the target population through PI community organizations and the resulting changes in physical activity behaviors in the targeted population. Preliminary evaluation measures have helped us gauge community organizations readiness and capacity to successfully adopt this intervention to reach eligible individuals for participation. Two follow-up evaluations will help us measure intervention impact through individual changes in frequency and attitudes towards engaging in physical activity and the organizations' ability to sustain this newly adopted intervention.
