Policy and advocacy -- problems, solutions, and public health

The Policy and Advocacy Workgroup seeks to preserve and advance a public health agenda in the marketplace and in government by conducting advocacy activities. Over the past five years, nurses have lead actions such as: • Drafting and submitting editorials to major newspapers; • Creating sign-on letters and securing endorsements to urge action on an issue; • Communicating directly with the offices of their elected officials; • Conducting in-district and Capitol Hill meetings with decision-makers; and • Testifying at public hearings.

Learning Objectives:
Identify how to effectively communicate the nurse perspective on the failure of existing chemical regulations to adequately meet public health needs, and make recommendations for improvements. Describe how to effectively communicate the need for adjustments in the marketplace in materials selection, in order to improve environmental health and meet public health needs Name four examples of regulatory failures, their impacts on the marketplace, and their threats to public health.

Qualified on the content I am responsible for because: I have developed and led various policy and advocacy programs for nurses, health-affected organizations, and environmental health and justice organizations for over 20 years. My efforts have included groundbreaking reports about chemical body burden in health care professionals, toxic chemicals in common products, and green and healthy building materials. I have given numerous presentations to nurses focused on women's environmental health.
