Beyond the degree and certification: The professional development of health education specialists

Completing a degree program and successfully passing a certification exam are achievements in establishing the identity of the public health education professional. The need for education and professional development continues throughout the career of the practitioner. This presentation identifies the requirements and process to maintain the Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) certification and the Master Certified Health Education Specialist (MCHES) certification. The presenters will outline the various ways individuals can obtain continuing education contact hours to uphold certification. Key resources available to earn continuing education contact hours for CHES and MCHES will also be revealed. Also, presenters will discuss ways in which certified individuals can educate organizations to become designated providers of continuing education credits.

Qualified on the content I am responsible for because: As executive director of NCHEC, I have been involved with national projects on competency validation projects and have co-authored several peer reviewed journal articles on quality assurance and competency related issues. Under my leadership, the CHES certification earned accreditation by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA), meeting vigorous industry-wide standards for certification and has now introduced an advanced level of certification known as the Master Certified Health Education Specialist.
