Immigration trends in southern California and health: A case for increased cultural competence toward improving outcomes
Reviewing immigration trends in Southern California, this poster presents a five county study (Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino, Riverside and San Diego) of current health conditions and discusses how culturally competent services can provide specific and effective public health measures to serve a diverse population. This presentation provides both a spatial and outcomes-focused discussion on immigration trends into Southern California, current health needs, and established cultural competency standards in order to guide a discussion on how to determine relevant and practical measures for effective services to multicultural populations. Methods involve geographic information systems analysis of populations through 2010 Census data on the foreign born population, in addition to reviewing the existing National Standards on Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services (CLAS) and other standards such as with the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), National Quality Forum, and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation 2013 County Health Rankings. This information will guide the process of identifying disease trends in each county, and in providing examples of immigrant health needs in Southern California.
