Instances of male on male sexual violence: A three campus study

Studies have indicated the existence and perpetuation of common myths and misconceptions toward male rape and/or sexual violence victims. The prevalence of such misconceptions has frequently been associated with social constructs of gender stereotype and homophobia. Research has also suggested that rates of male on male sexual violence are often underreported due to such stereotypes and assumptions. A recent study collected reports of sexual violence among students enrolled in three United States university campuses and human subjects approval was obtained from all three campuses. Data was collected via electronic mail and by pencil and paper methods. SPSS 20 was used to analyze the results. Results indicated an incidence of male on male sexual violence on these campuses. Although numbers were comparatively much less than those reported by women (N=26), the incidence of unwillingness among male victims to report sexual assault were considered in necessitating this study. Specific types of sexual violence, among both victims and perpetrators were examined. In addition, contributing factors such as drug and alcohol use, as well and the after effects of sexual violence among men were examined. This study also seeks to promote recognition and awareness among campus counselors and health educators in addressing male on male sexual violence, as well as to further develop existing sexual violence prevention programs in general.
