Relationship between self-rated health and depression in the elderly with physical disabilities

Purpose The purpose of this study was to explain the relationship of health behaviors, self-rated health and depression in the elderly with physical disabilities.
Design and Methods The subjects of this study were 166 elderly people aged over 65 living in community-dwelling, with physical disabilities. The data was collected by self-reported through questionnaires from October to November, 2010.
Results The major findings of this study are as follows. Of the subjects, 26.7% were depressed(CES-D score >21). Depression had positive correlations with self-rated health, and self-rated health had positive correlations with health behavior(regular medical examination). In addition, there was a negative correlation between depression and level of education and economic level.
Conclusions From the results of the study, we suggested that the development of health education program for the health behaviors including the factors affecting depression in the elderly with physical disabilities.
