Assessing campus climate for lgbtq college students: Results from the outlook on mason photovoice project

Little research has explored the campus climate for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer/questioning (LGBTQ) college students, including experiences with health and other student services. The purpose of the OUTlook on Mason photovoice project was to capture LGBTQ students' experiences via photographs and creative writing pieces and to formulate recommendations to improve the campus climate for LGBTQ students. Through the documentation, discussion, and sharing of photographs and creative writing pieces, students at one mid-Atlantic university were able to bring attention to LGBTQ issues and make recommendations to improve the campus climate. A purposive sample of nine LGBTQ undergraduate students (aged 18-24 years) participated in the photovoice project over a five-month period during the 2011-2012 academic year. Students met bi-monthly to discuss photographs, share experiences, and make recommendations to improve the campus climate for LGBTQ students. Select photographs and creative writing pieces were placed on display and a formal presentation was made to students, faculty, staff, and university leadership during LGBTQ Pride Week. Major themes that emerged were recognition of and respect for identity, campus safety, and availability of resources. A comprehensive list of recommendations were generated that addressed the university's anti-discrimination policy; the availability of information, education, and training; housing and other facilities; student health services and education; counseling services; and family issues and involvement. Photovoice is a creative way to engage students in community building and to bring attention to campus climate issues for LGBTQ college students.
