Monday, November 4, 2013 : 10:30 a.m. - 10:46 a.m.

Sabrina Dickey, PhD, College of Nursing, Florida State University, Tallahassee, FL
Background: The objectives of the study are to analyze the influence of intrapersonal (age, education, perceived health status and income), interpersonal (marital status, marital and family support) and community factors (church attendance) on African American men receiving a prostate cancer screening. I hypothesize the factors are interrelated and work together to influence African American men to receive a prostate cancer screening. Prostate cancer continues to be a major health issue for men in the U.S. (Jemal, Siegel, Xu & Ward, 2010). Various psychosocial and community factors have been shown to influence African American men to receive a prostate cancer screening. Methods: A mixed methodology study was conducted to analyze factors linked with prostate cancer screening among African American men. The Center of Disease Control and Prevention's 2007-2008 National Health and Nutrition Examination data set and interviews were used in the study. Utilizing SPSS statistical software, logistic regression will be the selected statistical analyses. Results: The results are a work in progress, as this research is based on my dissertation, which is currently being written. I will have the results from research in May and I will graduate with a PhD in Family Relations in August 2013 Conclusions: The main outcome of the study will be the exploration of the variables in relation to African American men receiving a prostate cancer screening. The results can provide a foundation for exploring the usefulness of community based organizations, such as the church, to promoting prostate cancer screening.
