Unhealthy communities and cities are a serious business issue

Monday, November 4, 2013 : 9:30 a.m. - 9:45 a.m.

Martin Sepulveda, M.D;, Health Research, IBM Research, Somers, NY
The US health system's performance scorecard shows little improvement despite massive expenditures compared to similar OECD countries. Inadequate community health value from these expenditures adversely affects business talent acquisition, workforce productivity and resiliency, labor cost competitiveness and the creation of new markets required for growth. Unhealthy communities and cities are no longer simply opportunities for responsible philanthropy or good corporate citizenship, these are key strategic business issues. Systems based approaches to healthier communities and cities are essential to accelerate the supply of talent and new customers for business growth and economic development.
