Objects: This study was performed to evaluate the association between dietary intake of nutrients and periodontitis. Methods: KNHANES IV database (2007-2009) including total 23631 Korean persons among 12000 households was used for the analysis. Of them, 11415 adults more than 19 years old were selected for the final evaluation. Periodontitis was determined by Community Periodontal Index Score ≥3. The amount of nutrients intakes including Vitamin (Vit) B2 (riboflavin) and Vit C were taken by 24 hour recall interview. Personal data including age, gender was also taken by interview. Normal nutrient dosage daily required was dichotomized by Dietary Reference Intakes for Koreans 2010 [VitB2 ≥1.3ug/day for male and >1.0ug/day for female, Vit C≥75mg/day]. Multivariable logistic regression including Vit A, Vit B1, Vit B2, niacin, Vit C, calcium, phosphate, iron and protein , age and gender was applied to evaluate the adjusted odds ratio (OR). Results: Vit B2 and Vit C intake were associated with the reduction of periodontitis prevalence among Korean adults (p<0.01). The normal intake of Vit B2 and C, compared to the deficiency of each nutrient, was associated with the reduction of periodontitis prevalence by 15% for Vit B2 and 13% for Vit C. Conclusion: VitB2 and Vit C were independently associated with reduction of periodontitis. Sufficient dietary intake of Vit B2 and Vit C could be substantial issue to control periodontitis for promoting public oral health care.
