A highly interactive, video-rich online training currently prepares a cohort of 230 community health workers to implement an evidence-based HIV/pregnancy prevention program with youth and their parents in their primarily African American communities. The training aims to increase the community health workers' comfort and effective implementation of the program.

Given the high travel costs related to providing face-to-face training to a national cohort of community health workers, an online training approach was chosen. In addition to cost effectiveness, the online approach allows for different learning sytles and paces, provides periodic interative assessments, allows for self-guided repetition and reinforcement, and provides ongoing support throughout implementation of the program in the community. Gamification techniques were used to increase the motivation to engage in and complete the training, including the use of avatars, a point system, and a window into their co-facilitator's progress. Results of the benefits of these techniques will be shared. Key elements of the training were video models, video-based assessments, adapttive learning messages, skills and session based modules, and text and email reinforcers. Community health workers' assessment of the most useful key elements will be shared, as well as their expressed desires for elements that could improve the training.
