Investigation of dried bean, lentil and rice samples in terms of pesticide residues collected from supermarkets and periodic markets in central district of ankara and some shopping characteristics of the consumers using these markets

Aim of this descriptive study is to investigate dried bean, lentil and rice samples in terms of pesticide residues collected from supermarkets and periodic markets in central district of Ankara and determine some shopping characteristics of the consumers. Supermarkets and stands in periodic markets selling dry food and individuals shopping from these places constitute the universe of this descriptive study. Fifty two periodic markets and 18 supermarkets have been visited in the study. Five hundred and fourty- eight persons has been interviewed face to face shopping from 52 periodic markets and 18 supermarkets. The laboratory analysis have been performed by using spectrophotometer and GC/MS. Descriptive statistics, Chi square, Fisher's exact test test have been utilized for statistical analysis and p<0.05 has been assumed for statistical significance. Of the participants 59.3% (n=328) were male, 35.9% (n=197) were between 25 and 34 years of age, 77.4% (n=424) were married. Price and quality are the properties participants pay most attention. More than 80% of the participants buy 3 of the products from supermarkets. Thirty two point eight percent (n=180) of the participants have stated that pollutants might exist in three of the products and 58.3% (n=105) of these have stated that pollutants might have adverse effects on health. In the laboratory analysis 2.1% (n=6) of all the products are positive and 6.0% (n=17) are suspected in terms of pesticide residue. Five of the positive and 16 of the suspected results are collected from periodic markets. Preserving duration longer than 7 days is significantly higher at the products with positive or suspected results than the products with negative results (p<0.05). Organochlorine pesticides have been detected in all of the six positive and six suspected samples. It is suggested that monitoring be increased especially in the products sold in periodic markets in terms of pollutants.
