The session will present a variety of potential topic areas that could be addressed through the use of MEPS data: access to care; health care utilization for policy relevant groups; trends in healthcare expenditures; current health status and changes over time; and health insurance status at a point in time as well as trends over time. Participants will be encouraged to volunteer research projects of interest. Demonstrations will follow to illustrate the steps necessary to address specific research proposals. The content of specific questionnaires will be discussed and demonstrated via the internet: alternative care, preventive care (adult and child); available demographic and income data; employment status, job and wage characteristics; and satisfaction with health plans. Additionally, a discussion pertaining to variable naming conventions and the use and meaning of reserve codes will be provided.
