Engaging health plans in child injury prevention

Background: Unintentional injuries among children age 0-19 remain the leading cause of death from 2000-2009 despite a significant 30% decrease over this time period. Supporting childhood unintentional injury prevention (CUIP), Education Development Center (EDC) and National Institute for Health Care Management (NIHCM) Foundation are collaborating to explore the feasibility of implementing strategies in the CDC's National Action Plan (NAP) for CUIP with health plans. Methods: Nine health plans with 19 million members are working with EDC and NIHCM on this project. We created a data collection tool as a step to achieve a better understanding of health plans' current CUIP activities including implementation of NAP specific strategies. The responses from the health plans, along with follow-up phone calls and a meeting will result in a set of recommendations for CUIP within health plans. Results: The session will include the results of the data collection along with an assessment of health plan's current activities regarding evidence informed practice for CUIP. Presenters will also share the set of specific recommendations from a meeting with the health plans and explore strategies for CUIP project activities. Conclusions: Information about health plans' CUIP activities is currently limited. EDC and NIHCM's work will help to fill this gap. We will describe current health plan best practices for CUIP, highlighting examples of innovative collaborations, and opportunities to expand efforts and partnerships.

Ms. Santoro has authored multiple publications on injury prevention including an April 2010 issue brief on adolescent injury prevention. She has lead several webinars on health plan efforts to reduce bullying in schools, and has participated in expert meetings on other injury prevention topics.
