Comprehensive asthma management programs utilizing the coordinated school health model are important for improving the health status of students. The American Lung Association's Asthma-Friendly Schools Initiative that was developed with a cooperative agreement with the CDC and the "Kickin' Asthma school based education program will be presented. In addition, the implications of asthma on academic achievement, primarily due to absenteeism will be discussed. A national profile of minority and non-minority school-aged youth who received care for asthma will give insight into policies and provisions for care of children with asthma. | |||
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, the participant (learner) in this session will be able to: 1. Identify the compoments of a comprehensive school-based asthma management and education. 2.Identify the importance of effective community-based partnerships to address asthma in schools. 3. Understand the relationship between poor asthma management and the health, well-being and achievement of children. 4.Discuss the national profile of Medicaid minority and non-minority school-aged youth who received care for asthma. | |||
