In this session, papers will be presented on current issues related to prevention of, preparation for, and response to terrorism -- defined as "politically motivated violence or the threat of violence, especially against civilians, with the intent to instill fear" -- and on the consequences of the “war on terrorism.” Presentations will address the adverse health consequences of the attacks on the World Trade Center on the exposed population in New York, including recovery and deconstruction workers; legal and public health consequences of policies that restrict civil liberties and human rights; and the positive and negative effects of measures taken to prevent and prepare for terrorist attacks.
Learning Objectives: At the end of the session participants will be able to recognize the consequences to public health, civil liberties, and human rights of the "war on terrorism" and to analyze measures being advocated to prevent and prepare for terrorist attacks.
