Emergency Preparedness in Schools
The need to increase communities' emergency and disaster preparedness and response is critical for the safety and well-being of residents. School personnel, including school nurses have an important role in planning and responding to disaster and emergencies and this session will address this. In addition, lessons learned from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita will highlight the role of schools, particularly school based health centers into emergency preparedness.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, the participant (learner) in this session will be able to: 1. Assess the levels of preparedness in dealing with potential school-based emergencies or disasters. 2. Identify how school staff such as school nurses can be prepared and involved in emergencies or disasters. 3.Understand the role of school-based health centers in school and community-wide disaster preparedness planning and response after a disaster strikes.
