The former Director of the Office for Human Research Protections at the Department of Health and Human Services discusses ongoing initiatives and deficiencies in processes for review, approval and oversight of human studies, and what we can do to improve the situation.

• To explain how the situation can be improved by more effective use of proven quality improvement strategies.
