Licensed Practical Nurses Providing Long Term Care: Effects of Changes in Supervisory Status

Katherine Cox, MEd , MPH, American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, 1625 L Street, NW, Washington, DC 20036, 202/429-1159, kcox@afscme.org

The anticipated ruling by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) on the supervisory status of certain workers has generated anxiety and apprehension in the health care worker community. The effect of a far-reaching ruling has also received significant press coverage. However, much of that coverage has focused on registered nurses (RNs) in acute care settings. This presentation will discuss the ruling's impact on licensed practical nurses (LPNs) in long term care, where nearly all the care is overseen by this group of workers. We will also explore approaches that unionized LPNs can use to protect their right to collectively bargain and why the ruling could have detrimental consequences on quality care.
