APHA Affiliates can be effective in state-level advocacy initiatives. Recently, the Vermont Public Health Association was involved in a state-level advocacy effort in support of establishing universal health care in the state. This effort led to Governor Douglas signing two bills into law that establish a new state-funded insurance program for the uninsured and require employers to pay assessments if they do not offer health care coverage to their workers. Session attendees will learn about effective state-level advocacy techniques and activities that are replicable for their state and Affiliate.

Learning Objectives:

• Participants will gain general knowledge of the different components of participating in a state-level advocacy initiative (developing an outcome/goal/message, understanding who is for your issue and against, timeline and implementation).
