This session will discuss the current initiatives across the country in the area of health information technology (HIT) and will address the leadership role of public health in health information exchange. The use of electronic health systems and health information technology is a breakthrough area in public health and is being explored by state and local public health agencies across the country for a variety of public health programs. Presenters will highlight the emerging opportunities for public health efforts; access to clinical data could allow for a more efficient and effective public health response during public health emergencies as well as stronger prevention efforts. This session will emphasize the need for public health to play an active leadership role in the development and implementation of health information exchanges.
