Research Objective: Develop and evaluate use of an online data query tool to expand use of the 2001-National Survey on Children with Special Health Care Needs and the 2003-National Survey on Children's Health among Federal and state policymakers, program leaders and family and healthcare system leaders.

Study Design: Obtained input during educational workshops and from users of the Data Resource Center (DRC) for Child and Adolescent Health. Evaluated the data to assess the effectiveness of the DRC website in expanding use of national data sets by non-research audiences.

Population Studied: Federal and state Title-V leaders focusing on children and youth with special health care needs and leaders participating in the Family Voices consortium. (N = 72 pretest; N = approx. 12,000 beta test)

Principal Findings: Over 85% indicated they were "extremely interested" in learning about and accessing national and state level child health data. Over 83% indicated they would be "extremely likely" to use the website. Over 60,000 hits to the DRC were recorded during its nine month start-up period. The majority of visitors used the online interactive data query tool. Data findings obtained from the DRC were used in grant applications, legislative testimony, public education, stakeholder education/engagement, state block grant needs/performance assessments and many other applications.

Conclusions: Policymakers, program leaders and family and healthcare system leaders have a strong interest in being able to directly access and validly use data findings from national and state surveys on child and adolescent health.

Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this session participants will be able to

• Identify several of the child health measures developed using the two national survey datasets and demonstrate understanding of the process that was used to construct them.
• Use the DRC online data query tool to examine variations observed in these measures across states and for selected subgroups.
• Consider alternative approaches for assessing and interpreting findings from the national surveys.
• Describe how state and family leaders are using findings from the national surveys to assess needs and improve programs for children and families.
