While numerous studies have been conducted with hospitalized smokers in the past, the current trend in health care shows a move towards more outpatient procedures and shorter hospital stays. This innovative RCT study utilized a harm reduction approach that focused on intervening with patients who smoke 10 or more cigarettes per day and are unwilling/unable to quit smoking,. Instances of intervention occurred once before and several times after each participant's outpatient surgery or invasive diagnostic procedure. Individually tailored self-help print materials, combined with telephone counseling, were integrated into a “best practices” intervention. Three independent research organizations participated in the development and delivery of this intervention. To be discussed are the details of the intervention design, paralleled with the logistics of integrating four telephone calls with five newsletters, specifications on data transfers between the three organizations, and lessons learned about utilization of resources, timelines, and expectations. Cost analyses of our pilot study will also be presented to illustrate the expenses associated with the research components (development) of the project versus the end product (implementation).
