Over the last 20 years in the pork industry there has been a trend toward larger, indoor swine farms. This has resulted in increased numbers of employees being involved in the daily care of animals in these systems. Many of the larger pork producers have occupational safety officers responsible for the development of safety programming, delivery of training to the employees, and documentation and reporting of injuries. The Pork Checkoff sought input from representatives of this group, as well as other occupational safety experts, to help in the development of safety programming materials that would be accessible to producers of all sizes and include training on pork production specific issues. These materials, the Pork Production Safety System, provide employers information and templates to develop a farm specific safety plan, lesson plans and presentations for trainers responsible for delivering safety information, and an interactive computer based training module on compact disk. Due to the large number of Hispanic employees in pork production, materials have been produced in English and in Spanish. In addition to this Pork Production Safety System, there has been the development of a Worker Safety website for pork producers that provides information on OSHA and state regulations, health and safety information, research updates, and other pertinent information. Other resources include facilitation of safety officer conferences and communication channels. Pork producers have paid for this programming through the Pork Checkoff and are working toward development of a safety culture throughout the industry.
