Bright Futures is a national child health promotion and disease prevention initiative supported by the Maternal and Child and Health Bureau, Health Resources and Services Administration, US Department of Health and Human Services, and administered by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) that provides both direction and tools for high quality preventive health care that meet the needs of children, youth, and their families. As part of this effort, the AAP is partnering with families, public health, and other professional organizations to revise, update, and implement Bright Futures: Guidelines for Health Supervision of Infants, Children, and Adolescents, scheduled for publication in early 2007. The mission of Bright Futures is to promote the principle that every child deserves to be healthy, and that optimal health involves a trusting relationship between the health professional, child, family, and community. The revised guidelines were formulated by multidisciplinary teams including public health professionals, family physicians, pediatricians, nurse practitioners, nutritionists, mental health professionals, dentists, and parents. This presentation will discuss different examples of collaboration, used in the revision and implementation process of Bright Futures and provide an overview of Bright Futures, as an example of collaboration at the national level. Data from a Bright Futures implementation pilot project and its' accompanying resources, as well as processes used to develop and convene a multidisciplinary team of experts in the guidelines revision, lessons learned, and strategies for sustainability will be highlighted.
