In much of the developing world the private sector is the most important source of health care, yet private providers are not taken into consideration in public health planning. This presentation will address the various roles the private health sector plays in provision and financing of health products and services, where the private sector role is appropriate, or inappropriate, and strategies for how those working in developing countries can mobilize the private sector to improve public health in general and women's health in particular. Specifically the presentation will provide overview data on the role of the private sector in reproductive health and the types of interventions that have been most successful in mobilizing the private sector to achieve women's health goals.
