This session will look at federal, state and local initiatives aimed at transitioning our economy to a clean energy future. It will also explore the political dynamics that often prevent the successful passage or implementation of such initiatives. The Apollo Alliance, a coalition of unions, environmental groups, civil rights organizations, business and CBOs, has been promoting a federal program to end America's energy dependence by investing in clean energy technology and good jobs. The implementation of such a program would create 3 million jobs and reduce greenhouse gases and other pollution leading to positive impacts on public health. It would also create economic development opportunities in the places hardest hit by shifts in the economy, including the manufacturing Midwest and the urban core. In the absence of federal action, policymakers have been working in states and cities to pass policies that would achieve those goals.
