The Preventive Services Toolkit Workshop consists of six educational modules intended to enhance the analytic, advocacy and management skills of health professionals in both clinical and public health settings for the purpose of improving their efficacy as advocates for enhanced preventive service programming in both clinical and community settings. The six topics covered in this all-day workshop are the Evidence Base for Preventive Services, Advocacy/Planning/Evaluation, Epidemiology as a Policy Tool, Power Structure (stakeholder) Analysis, Principles of Community Oriented Primary Care (partnering with communities) and Data/Privacy. The federal grant that made these workshops possible also provided funds for post-workshop e-mail and phone follow-up and limited on-site consultation to assist in the application of workshop skills to interested agencies and communities. The curriculum is based on the real-life experience not currently well covered (to our knowledge) in MPH or other preventive medicine and public health training programs. Much of the material has been drawn from public administration, social work and community health center policy and administrative practices. The first of these workshops was given in February of 2006. This presentation at APHA will provide the first public feedback of the efficacy of the workshop materials in terms of real-life implementation and impact on preventive services. Special attention will be given to the relative value of each of the modules presented and whether current MPH and other training programs should be expanded to include the skill sets covered in the workshop.

Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to

• Describe and discuss the efficacy of this innovative 1-day curriculum.
• Set priorities for adding selected elements of this curriculum to their in-service and other educational offerings.
• Know how to arrange for this material to be taught to their students and staff.
• Discuss the value of these new skill sets in both partnering with communities and enhancing their skills when submitting proposals for new or expanded preventive services within their healthcare delivery system or public health agency
