Background: The Federal No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act focuses attention on the assessment of traditional academic subjects. The effect of NCLB on the implementation of the instructional components of Coordinated School Health Programs (CSHP) is still largely unknown. Objective: To (1) document the perceived effects of NCLB on CSHP in New York State and (2) identify opinions about the future direction of New York CSHP in the context of NCLB. Methods: A cross-sectional survey of a purposive sample of 20 key informants will be conducted to collect systematic data from New York state, regional, and local administrators of CSHP about the perceived effects of NCLB on CSHP in New York. The survey questionnaire consists of closed-format as well as open-format questions. Pilot interviews and expert review are being used to establish content validity and reliability of the questionnaire. All data will be collected during telephone interviews. Results: Because what little is known about the effects of NCLB on the instructional components of CSHP is largely anecdotal, the data we are collecting should contribute to a more informed understanding of how NCLB affects the implementation of CSHP. This presentation will describe the development, results, and interpretation of those data.
