The purpose of this study was to determine the smoking habits of Baskent University students in Ankara. The sample size included 3488 students, which was selected out of 6144.students and 3156 (90.5%) of them participated the study. We administered 33-item tobacco questionnaire, which was prepared according to the World Health Organization's advises. Smoking status was assessed by the question: "Are you currently smoking?" Those who answered "yes" were classified as current smokers, regardless of how many cigarettes they had smoked in the past. Of the participants 59.4% were females and 30.6% were current smokers. The mean age of the students were 20.1 „b 2.0. The median age at the initiation of smoking and number of cigarettes smoked per day were, 17.0 (5-26), 13.0 (1-80) respectively. The logistic regression analysis revealed that smoking status was not significantly influenced by grade, current living place and education status of mother (p>0.05) while sex, marital status of parents had a significant impact on smoking. Males were 1.2 times (95% CI 1.01-1.41) more likely to smoke and below while those whose parents divorced or dead had a 1.5 times (95% CI 1.16-1.98) higher chance of smoking. There were positive, statistically significant relationship between daily consumption of cigarette with monthly income and daily pocket money while negative, statistically significant relationship was determined between daily consumption of cigarette and initial age of smoking (p<0.05). According to our results, one out of three university students smoke cigarettes and smoking is influenced by sex and marital status of parents
