Background: The Center for Sustainable Health Outreach (CSHO) is conducting a national study of community health worker (CHW) programs. The study seeks to identify all the CHW program sites in the 50 states and U.S. territories, and to collect data describing their operation. We are building a database that allows users to compare programs, including their evaluation methodologies and tools. The study's primary support comes from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.

Project Benefits: CSHO will provide access to the database via the Internet, making program information available by an online search process. Users of the system may retrieve information about each program's location, mission, organizational structure, target population, service delivery model, and evaluation efforts. Access to the data can facilitate additional research on CHW programs and their effectiveness. CSHO is collaborating with the Regional Center for Health Workforce Studies, of the University of Texas Health Science Center – San Antonio, on their Community Health Workers National Workforce Study, which is funded by HRSA.

Value: Attendees will participate in an interactive tour of the database, and can order a CD including select data from the project. By attending, they will learn about its uses, how it serves their need for reliable data on CHW program evaluation, and its benefits.

Presentation: Participants will be given an overview of the data collection effort; gain an understanding of project output; see the database in action; view practical ideas for using the information; and, increase their knowledge of CHW program funding, training and evaluation issues.
