An instrument, the Community Participation and Perceived Receptivity Survey (CPPRS), was developed to measure factors that influence the participation of people with mobility impairments in doing community activities. The survey is personalized to the person depending on where they go and how important it is for them to go to a particular community site. The Community Activity Form (CAF) is used to determine which sections of the CPPRS the respondent will complete. The CAF asks the respondent to indicate which community sites they have visited in the last month (ex: grocery store, place of employment) and within the last year (ex: doctor's office, sports arena) as well as if it is important for them to visit these sites. In the CPPRS for each site the person may indicate barriers to community participation including personal factors (pain, fatigue, illness), environmental factors (physical factors in the environment, social attitudes, and lack of transportation), and level of assistance needed (such as a personal assistant or an assistive technology device) while visiting the site, as well as evaluative questions related to how satisfied and how much choice they have while visiting the site. A purposive sample of over 135 individuals with mobility limitations (34 power wheelchair users, 37 manual wheelchair users, 29 scooter users, and 35 cane/crutch/walker users) completed the surveys. This presentation will specifically report test retest reliability and internal consistency statistics. The scoring process for the measurement system and differences between participation by mobility device group will also be discussed.

Learning Objectives:

• Understand “participation” and “environmental factors” as these apply to persons with mobility impairments
• Learn the range of public health uses of this survey instrument for identifying and measuring the impact of the physical, social and built environments on participation in major life activities for people with mobility impairments.
• Become aware that community participation by people with mobility impairments may be assessed by more than frequency count. Choice, satisfaction, importance, physical limitations, assistive technology, personal assistance and environmental; factors all need to be included.
