Lillian U. Smith, DrPH, MPH, CHES, Director, SC Public Health Consortium, University of South Carolina, Arnold School of Public Health, 800 Sumter Street, HPEB, Columbia, SC 29208, 803-777-4788, smithlu@gwm.sc.edu and Joe Kyle, MPH, Director, Office of Performance Management, SC Department of Health and Environmental Control, Mills/Jarrett Complex--Box 101106, Columbia, SC 29211.

An integral part of the Arnold School of Public Health (A-SPH) and the SC Department of Health and Environmental Control's (DHEC) long history has involved professional development and educational activities. In order to strength this inherent relationship, the South Carolina Public Health Consortium formed the Curriculum Workgroup with key representatives from both the A-SPH and DHEC

The Curriculum Workgroup was tasked with assessing professional development needs and identifying and/or developing continuing education and academic courses/programs to meet the needs and identifying faculty from A-SPH and DHEC for course development and facilitation. In order to complete its charges, the Workgroup completed the several activities, including 1) reviewing the SC Workforce Assessment; 2) compiling a list of public health certificates offered by schools of public health and community public health programs and contacted certificate programs of interest; 3) performing a Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats analysis; 4) reviewing pertinent state policies on educational initiatives for state employees; 5) searching the literature for articles/reports on the effectiveness of certificates in public health workforce development; 6) reviewed the core public health courses at the A-SPH and the various MPH degree programs; and 7) inventorying current continuing education courses developed by both the Consortium and the Turning Point Initiative. This comprehensive assessment led to the development of continuing education and graduate credit certificate programs.
