The prevalence of overweight in children and adolescents has significantly increased over the past two decades, particularly among minority communities. To combat California's obesity epidemic, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger convened an action Summit on Health, Nutrition and Obesity in September 2005, which brought together leaders and experts from the business, education, government, managed care, and public health communities, and resulted in commitments designed to improve the health and physical fitness of Californians and help combat the state's obesity crisis. To involve health plans, the Governor's Vision for a Healthy California listed as one of the 10 steps toward healthy living that health insurers and health care providers will promote physical activity and health eating. Health Net made specific commitments at the Governor's Summit to provide a variety of programs and resources to address obesity prevention. These programs and resources include offering group-level and on-line weight management programs, funding for education and innovation at the provider office to fight childhood obesity, participation in community collaboratives, telephonic support for members, provider trainings and member education. This multi-level intervention initiative offers an array of health education programs. These programs are benefit enhancements offered to children and parents with both commercial and State Health Programs Insurance products. Processes of program development, evaluation measures, transportability and applicability of lessons learned will be discussed. Effectiveness of intervention components will also evaluated and discussed where possible.
