Studies have demonstrated that as little as one physician-patient conversation addressing tobacco use can significantly increase the odds of cessation. Despite these data, little emphasis is placed on providers when addressing tobacco cessation. Research has identified a number of barriers reported by physicians which limit their ability to address tobacco use by their patients. These include time, cost, knowledge/training and confidence in the intervention. While most physicians report speaking to their patients about tobacco use, only a minority provide targeted cessation intervention. This study examined the beliefs, attitudes, training and practices of physicians from various specialties at a large University Medical Center. Five hundred physicians were surveyed using an online questionnaire. They were asked to report on their training, current practice and perceived barriers associated with tobacco cessation (data pending). Most existing tobacco cessation programs emphasize patient factors as they relate to success. The present study proposes a model for intervention that places emphasis on the providers responsible for tobacco cessation delivery. Specifically, the model addresses training, motivation and resources important to the providers with the goal of eliminating perceived barriers. It is hypothesized that facilitating the process of tobacco cessation by reducing and/or eliminating such barriers and increasing physician involvement could have a profound impact on rates of tobacco cessation as well as success. A plan for implementing such a model is discussed in addition to future research needs.
